Why Single Ply Roofing is Superior to Hot Tar for Your Flat Roof
Flat roofing has made a dramatic technology shift over the last few decades. Rather than using sticky, unsafe, un-friendly-to-the-environment, inefficient hot tar – the industry has now moved to what is called “single ply”.
Single ply is based on new developments in plastics and chemistry. This energy efficient roofing is basically a big, rubber roof (usually white in color – see picture). It last much longer than hot tar roofing (up to 50 years) and is superior in almost every way.
Although single ply has been around since the sixties, it is now finally becoming the standard in quality flat roofing. Single ply is essentially big rolls of various combinations of rubber, pvc, plastic and other chemicals. Single ply is longer lasting than hot tar (20 years vs. 50 years) and it is much easier and safer to install. Single ply also has a more reflective surface (helping to save energy), is recyclable and fire resistant.
Single ply used to be more expensive to install than hot tar – but with the rising oil prices – hot tar is about the same price and does not have nearly the same benefits or durability… making single ply the obvious choice.
